In 1674 zag lakenhandelaar Antoni van Leeuwenhoek onder zijn zelfgebouwde microscoop kleyne diertgens.

Animalcules noemde hij ze. Bacteriën weten we nu.

Miljoenen mensen stierven sinds mensenheugenis aan ziekten die deze kleine diertjes op hun geweten hadden. Toch zou het nog twee eeuwen duren voor het verband werd gelegd tussen Van Leeuwenhoeks diertgens en cholera, tuberculose, noem maar op.

Waarom duurde dat zo lang? Medici konden een 2500 jaar oude theorie over ziekte niet loslaten. Ze zaten in een tunnel. 

Historicus Hans Mulder is conservator van de Artis Bibliotheek van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij zit dagelijks tussen boeken vol dwalingen en ontdekkingen. Hij zal ons een paar heuse tunnels tonen.

Wat moet men in de 16e eeuw met alle onbekende dieren uit de ‘Nieuwe Wereld’? Wat doet de draak in de boeken van natuuronderzoeker Ulisse Aldrovandi? Ontstaan insecten uit vuilnis, zoals Aristoteles beweerde? Hoe doet Van Leeuwenhoek zijn onderzoek eigenlijk?

Zangeres en vocalcoach BRITTA MARIA en pianist/zanger MAURITS FONDSE (o.a. band van Freek de Jonge) staan samen in het theater met het concert 'Chansons van Schoonheid en Troost' een ontmoeting tussen het Franse en het Nederlandse lied.
Op deze middag geven zij samen een Masterclass waarin de nadruk ligt op interpretatie en expressie van het lied - hoe vertel je het verhaal achter het lied en hoe breng je dat tot uitdrukking. 
Iedereen krijgt de kans zonder publiek aan één of twee liedjes te werken. Daarna is er de mogelijkheid om op te treden voor publiek tijdens het studentenconcert.
Alle muziek wordt tijdens de masterclass en het leerlingenconcert begeleid door de pianist.

Over het nut van het nutteloze: een herwaardering van een oude ondeugd. 

Hartje zomer in het hart van Amsterdam trekken wij ons terug uit alle haast, things to do en geroezemoes om ons te verdiepen in lof der luiheid. Aan de hand van filosofen, en ook in de praktijk. Een exclusieve vierdaagse voor een beperkt aantal deelnemers. 

Heb je er genoeg van om je door het leven te haasten, alsmaar druk te zijn, en je leven te laten bepalen door nut, agenda’s, smartphones en andermans wensen? Wil je je niet langer schuldig voelen bij nietsdoen?

Luiheid heeft van oudsher een slechte naam, maar is dat terecht? Is er voor innerlijke rust niet een forse dosis luiheid nodig? En kan creativiteit wel zonder? Luiheid is belangrijk voor het persoonlijk welzijn en levensvreugde. Verder is luiheid existentieel van belang: om je te bezinnen, om je te ontplooien, om zin te houden in het leven. En wat te denken van ‘innerlijke luiheid’?

Aan de hand van een aantal filosofen onderzoeken we de verborgen kwaliteit van luiheid. We doen dit vanuit verschillende invalshoeken, met name: Paul Lafargue, Taoïsme, Spinoza, Stoa en Epicurus. Wat dachten zij over het recht op luiheid, nutteloosheid, vrijheid en genieten? Met Bregman en Harari kijken we naar onze huidige wereld.

Naast de filosofen, gaan we de stad met andere ogen bekijken: de kunst van het flierefluiten oefenen, stilte in de stad zoeken, ons verwonderen op het onthaastingspad. Ook bieden wij een luie onthaastende 'menukaart' kaart aan, voor wie buiten het programma nog meer wil ontdekken. Niets moet, alles mag.

Naast de filosofen, gaan we de stad met andere ogen bekijken: de kunst van het flierefluiten oefenen, stilte in de stad zoeken, ons verwonderen op het onthaastingspad. Ook bieden wij een luie onthaastende 'menukaart' kaart aan, voor wie buiten het programma nog meer wil ontdekken. Niets moet, alles mag.

Imagine Anne Frank would meet Rembrandt. What would they discuss? Well, why not the place where they lived: Amsterdam. It is the starting point of a sparkling one man theatre show, in which Jaap Vriend tells the intriguing story of the rise of Amsterdam.

In the Torpedo Theatre, Amsterdam smallest but most beautiful venue, Jaap Vriend leaves the beaten track of tulips, joints and clogs. Instead he narrates the town’s most important historical moments like the miracle of Amsterdam, intertwined with the inspiring biographies of influential inhabitants such as Rembrandt, Spinoza and Anne Frank. Vriend will add a local touch through personal experiences and songs about his beloved Amsterdam. 

In this show curious visitors or inhabitants of Amsterdam are able to travel through the Amsterdam ages, meet its world-famous celebrities and locations and learn why this world village is known as the most tolerant city in the world.

Jaap Vriend
Jaap Vriend is a stage performer. He is known for his attracting way of storytelling, his sense of humour and his improvisation abilities. He lives and works in Amsterdam and is fluent in English.
